Indigo Giant

Indigo monopoly

Britain monopolised trade in indigo, the world’s only natural dye, in the 19th century. And it monopolised the lives of Bengali peasants who cultivated and processed the dye.

This short was filmed entirely in Bangladesh and directed remotely from Britain during the Covid pandemic by Jatinder Verma. The film, with Bangla translation by Leesa Gazi, is presented in Bengali, with English subtitles.

Based on a new play by Ben Musgrave, which in turn is inspired by trail-blazing 19th C play Nil Darpan by Dinabandhu Mitra – a play that shook colonial India.

"I do not think you were born for these fields..."
