Reincarnation as a trope for Theatre

Pretentious title for a guest lecture at Central St Martins to BA Performance – Design & Practice students…
Covid coupled with retirement from Tara – & now Ukraine – have made thoughts of death ever-present.
Energy of death fascinates, however – and perhaps that’s what theatre is – the energy of death. Unlike films, novels, paintings, sculpture, music etc, in its moment of creation is theatre’s death. The show WILL end, lines, actions disappearing into the ether. And in a sense we’re also performing – and seeing – in the past: the thing has happened, rarely IS happening…
Kenya’s independence my first moment of reincarnation – then Exodus – then GS Chaggar’s death etc etc
Every play a death & re-birth…
Adaptation as a form of reincarnation?
I start Tara with SACRIFICE !
Death = Energy (of sound/word, image, story)
